Why would a CPA need to employ a CMEA? click for Answer

CPAs are well versed in determining value; however, the value which is most familiar to CPAs are "Book Value" and "Net Book Value." Unfortunately, these two values are not the values used for business valuation or Machinery and Equipment appraisal purposes. The two most important values in these areas are "Fair Market Value" and "Fair Value".

Why is Fair Market Value used instead of Book Value? click for Answer

Book value is the difference between the acquisition cost and depreciation, which does not reflect the true value that would be obtained on the open market. However, Fair Market Value is the current value for which an asset may be obtained on the open market.

Are Machinery and Equipment Appraisals needed when a Business Valuation is prepared? click for Answer

Sometimes. With some businesses, the tangible assets are a significant part of the operations and are of significant value. Therefore, the tangible assets may have to be segregated to ensure that the value of the business is properly valued. The processes and procedures used to value a business do not include the appraisal of tangible assets separately; hence, without a machinery and equipment appraisal, a business may be significantly under valued.
